The Russian American Line, founded in 1900, was originally called the Russian East Asiatic Steamship Co. Their services connected Russia and the Far East. After the Russo-Japanese War, Hamburg America Line had acquired a major interest in the Russian East Asiatic Company and they started a Libau - New York passenger service in 1906. Services ceased in 1917 after the Russian Revolution. Pictured is the Kursk, which went into service in 1910. The text proclaims, "Only direct service between Russia and America / Russian East-Asiatic Shipping / Home Office - Kurgavsky Avenue, Libau." Libau (or Libava or Liepaja) is a Latvian city on the Baltic Sea that at one point was one of Russia's most important ports in the region.
